Square it Up!

4 Apr

I don’t think I told you this, but I have another boutique coming up.  It is THIS week!  I am very excited to have been asked to participate in this boutique.  It features items made from Vintage Buttons.  I am one of only 3 artists that will be participating.  My good friend Stephanie from Keeko’s closet and Bloomz is one of the other featured vendors.  I just LOVE her handcrafted Bloomz.  They are the perfect addition to a hat, scarf, or just worn in your hair.  Check out a very small sampling of her work here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/Keekoscloset in her Etsy shop.  I’m excited to see her newest stuff.  She has promised selections from her original collection as well as some new exciting designs that I can’t wait to see.

The other participant is the sister of our host.  I haven’t had a chance to meet her yet, but I have done a little reconnaissance work with the world-wide web.  I found her Etsy site: http://www.etsy.com/shop/ButtonWillowJewelry  I have to be honest when I say, I’m a little scared that I might spend all of my profit from the boutique on her beautiful earrings.  I especially like the handcrafted earring stand…. If only I had enough earring to necessitate a stand.  I guess that problem may solve itself later this week.

So, needless to say, I have busy again creating a bunch of hats for this event.  I have been working hard at making some more spring like styles to suit the amazing weather we have been having lately.

After much thought, I decided I needed to find a reliable way to accept credit card payments for my hats.  Credit cards just seem to be what most people choose to carry these days, which means me not being able to accept them limits my business.  So, I did a little internet research and found the perfect solution.

Meet the Square:

This little white square contraption attached to the iphone is a credit card reader.  It, along with its fancy app for my iphone will easily allow me to process credit and debit card payments at any time.  I can’t wait to try it out at the boutique.  I did a test run and charged myself $1.00.  It went through perfectly using the wifi at my house, but the thing works great on 3g coverage as well.  Once the card has been slid through the device, the customer signs their name directly on my phone.  Then, they can choose to have a receipt emailed or texted to themselves.

I’m very excited for this new technology.  Even more excited by the price of this little gadget. FREE!  That’s right, once I signed up online, Square shipped this little bugger out to my house for free!  I didn’t have to pay for a thing.  Even the app download was free.  There are fees for using it, however, they are minimal and seem to be right on target with the other credit card readers out there.

If you live around the area and are looking for something to do this Friday, or Saturday, please come out and say hello.  The details are below:

Whew!

The boutique was a lot of work, but I was really pleased with how it went.  I sold about 1/2 of the hats that I prepared, but more importantly, I got a lot of positive feedback.  I had my first special order.  A hat for a 9 yr. old with a matching hat for her American Girl doll.  It was fun to make something so specific.  I delievered the completed hats today, so I’m excited to hear how they liked them.

Tonight I spent some time with what I think might be my new best friend: Etsy.  I got my Etsy shop up and running with 7 listed hats.  At this point I am only listing hats I actually have, not hats I can make.   I looked at several other shops selling similar items and I noticed they just list a generic photo of their products and then make them to order.  I think that is a good idea, but I’m not there yet.  At this point I am only comfortable listing things I already have made.  We will see how the 7 items do.

Check it out if you get a chance.

I made a super awesome hat for Keegan this past weekend!  As he continues to grow, I find I need to keep updating his kaps.  He wore it to the Home and Garden Expo we went to on Sunday.  We had a really great time looking at all the awesome stuff you can do with your landscaping……however we made one vital error.  We forgot the stroller, forgot the backpack, forgot a leash (j/k I don’t condone the use of dog supplies on your children) we somehow forgot any sort of restraint system.  Which, as I’m sure you can imagine led to a very LONG day.  Keegan didn’t want to hold hands while walking, he wanted to run around like a banshee.  He wanted to run circles around us, which makes trying to get through a crowded exhibition hall a little difficult to say the least.  He didn’t want to be held. (read – wiggly, jiggly, octopus) The only consolation we could find was the dum-dum lollipops several of the vendors had out.  Those very well may have been our saving grace.  With lollipop in mouth, Keegan would happily sit on Phil or my shoulders indefinitely.  Today I attempted to locate the kap I mentioned at the start of this story…. It is no where to be found.  I’m pretty sure we lost it in all the chaos of our adventure on Sunday.  I’m pretty bummed, but I know I can just make another.  The part that makes me the most sad is not that we lost it.  I’m actually pretty excited at the prospect of someone else finding the hat and loving it.  I’m most sad that I don’t have any sort of tag or label on there to refer them back here.  So, that being said,  my next big buisness purchase will be some sort of sew-in labels for all my kaps.  I’m reaserching ideas now, but I’m not 100% sold on anything I’ve found.

And now for a quick photo.

This little hat was a special request from a co-worker.  I really love how it turned out and will definitely be making some more just like it.  I plan on making more for the boutique show I’m a vendor at in March.  Yes, you read that right.  I was asked to do another boutique show!  It is in March, so I have a little time to prepare myself.

I can’t believe it is time for the boutique already!

I have been so busy preparing for the boutique on Friday, I’ve completely forgotten to blog about my progress.  I have made a TON of progress and am proud to say that I have competed about 30 kaps and 10 headbands.  I’m really excited for the many new styles and ideas.

Here are some of the headbands I created.  I really like the red, white, and blue one.  Perfect for this 4th of July festivities this summer.  I can’t wait to see some of my friends little girls sporting it.

I made a bunch of new kaps as well.  This is just a small sampling of them.

This brown hat’s buttons are vintage.  They came from a coat my mom had in high school.

I’m not a big pink, flower, lovey, dovey kind of gal.  So, this black and hot pink valentines beanie is right up my alley.  In my mind hot pink with black says ‘punk rock’, but the heart makes it just the right amount of festive.

I love the flower on this blue kap because it makes me think of Hawaii.  I wish I were in Hawaii now.  I mean seriously though, who doesn’t wish they were perpetually in Hawaii?

This grey kap is probably one of my all-time favorites.  I love the color because grey goes with everything.  I love the 3 mis-matched vintage buttons.  But, most of all, what you can’t get from this photo is how unbelievable soft this kap is.  It is like wearing a brand-new comfy sock on your head…..but not so weird and much more fashionable.

These 2 kaps feature more of the hibiscus-style flowers that I’m in love with right now.

This is a little girls kap that I made especially for the valentines theme of the boutique.

This red kap is one I call “The Perfect Fit”.  It fits snugly on my noggin.  I totally  love it and would consider keeping it for myself if I didn’t already have so many hats.

Last but certainly not least is this adorable little kap I made with some extra yarn from some adult styles.  This kap is perfect for newborn pictures of a little boy.  I find it hard to believe that  Keegan’s head would have ever fit into something that small, but I know it would have.

I’m both excited and nervous for the boutique.  I can’t wait to get some more feedback on all my hard work.  I just hope some other people love these things as much as I do.

Time to Get Busy

13 Jan

Despite my lack of blogging,  this week I have been busy with Keegan’s Kaps.  I am excited that I got the paypal links working on the men’s, women’s and kid’s kaps pages of the blog.  Not a huge accomplishment for the computer savvy, but one that had eluded me for nearly a week.  After much fiddling and ‘help’ page reading, I was finally able to make them work correctly.  Theoretically this means people could actually purchase kaps from me.  That being said, I have a TON to do.  A good friend of mine is hosting a handcrafted boutique at the end for the month.  She has asked me to be one of the vendors.  I’m very excited about the prospect this show provides.  Not only to sell some kaps, but to start getting the Keegan’s Kap name out there.  However, this means I need to get my little fingers going and get some more hats made…. a lot more hats made!

Lastnight though, instead of making hats, I made a flyer for the event.  I have to admit, I ‘borrowed’ some stuff off the internet, but I’m pretty pleased with the results.

Tonight I MUST make at least one hat.  I figure I should have at least 40 or so for the boutique.  That means I need 30 more since at this point I only have about 10 done.  That gives me 16 days to make 30 kaps.  Sounds doable right?  HA, can you sense my sarcasm straight through the computer?  Don’t forget, I work all day for 10 of those upcoming days.  When I get home from work I have my 2 yr old, whom upon turning 2 has taken up some serious bi-polar-like habits (read: typical 2-year-old fits), to take care of.  Not to mention the 5-6 other after work and weekend social endeavors I have signed myself and my family up for.  At this rate, I think I should feel blessed if I am able to make more than one kap in the upcoming weeks.  Nonetheless, I am up for a challenge and will keep you updated on my progress.  So, here are the latest kaps I have completed.

This ‘carrot’ colored hat was a special order for a co-worker.  I wasn’t sure about her request for an orange hat, but I am very pleased with how it turned out.  Luckily I bought enough of this yarn that I will be making a duplicate for the boutique.

This kid’s kap will travel with me to the boutique and hopefully land in the hands of an appreciative new customer.  It was a quick one to make and I like the way it turned out.  Not too pink, just a touch.

Another kid’s kap.  This was a new style I wanted to try.  Just one button that can be worn on either side.  The hat has a bit of a scrunched look on the side of the button.  I think it is a really cute modern style.  This one will also be available at the boutique, so I will be able to get some opinions on the new style before making a bunch more for my kid’s kap line.

So stay posted, on the edge of your seat.  More updates to come regarding my progress, or lack thereof.
